Associated with the Comyn, Douglas and Stewart clans. Strategically located in Glen Fiddich, this castle was the ancestral home and chief seat of the immensely powerful "Black" Comyn earls of Buchan, who ruled over this ancient Celtic region until they were wiped out by King Robert The Bruce in the 14th century.
The castle then becomes home of the "Black" Douglases, that formidable baronial family who provided many of Bruce's warriors. By 1455 the castle becomes a Stewart castle and remained so until it was abandoned in 1720.
